Was thinking today...not very happy with my current filtration. Planning on getting a HOB Skimmer for sure but was also thinking about this....
Canister filters hold larger volumes of water and circulate at a higher rate than a HOB. Since I don't have a way to do a sump at this time I was thinking about getting a canister and using it as a large media reactor instead. Can put in my purigen, chemi-pure phosphate media and just let it run. Then I can eliminate one of my HOB filters and use the other one with filter floss to help polish the water.
Thinking this would avoid me having all kinds of equipment hanging off the back and possibly side of the tank plus allow me extra room in the tank.
Thought? Good idea or plain bad idea lol?

It is definitely a very interesting thought. It has been seen where the purigen and CPE are in media bags in the canister. IMO getting as much flow through a canister as you can helps a lot.

that's what I was thinking. I was going to get another one like I have for my FW tank....it circulates approx 600gph. not getting anywhere near that with my 2 HOB's.

The canister is definitely possible. Just be ready for cleaning and they do a great job IME.

Go ahead and let us know how it pans out. Cleaning doesn't bother me much either; it lets you know the tank is healthy .

I start using Paypal for all my online orders. Almost everyone excepts it, and If they don't, I use a Visa.

Great. Yes, do keep me updated. I have started yet have to wait for the canister lol. Phosguard is great for the reactor, carbon is normally used to remove smells and also pollutants from the water. Are you running chemipure and/or purigen also?
